You’ll also be able to explore why writing can bring a sense of satisfaction to your life and gain insights into the creative process. So, let’s dive in and explore why I write, and why you might want to too!

Q- Could you please introduce yourself?

My name is K.R. King.  I am an author, wife, and mother of seven children.  For the past 18 years, my husband and I have been empowering young athletes physically and mentally by running an athletic training business. We have the knowledge and experience to help young athletes reach their goals and maximize their potential. Together, we’ve been married for 17 amazing years and enabled countless young athletes to succeed.

Q- When did you write your first book and what is the idea behind that?

I wrote my first book called Charlie the Champion about 8 years ago.

Fifteen years ago, I started training a kid who, despite facing the daily struggles of grade school life, overcame bullying and learned to believe in himself through participating in sports. His journey inspired me to write “Charlie the Champion” – a story revolving around his experiences and how sports can empower someone to become the best version of themselves.

Q- How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

As an author, I know firsthand the effort, dedication, and passion it takes to complete a manuscript; I’ve written a total of 8 books—7 that needed an extra TLC and one recently published called, Charlie the Champion. It’s certainly my favorite; every time I re-read it, I am inspired all over again.

Q- How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Writing a book can be incredibly easy when inspiration strikes – the words just seem to flow. But creating something truly great requires more than just a draft – it demands rigorous self-reflection, brutal honesty, and sometimes even complete rewrites. For fans of the craft, this just makes the final work more rewarding.

Q- Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

After witnessing the tenacity of children in the face of adversity, and how the comfort of a supportive word can completely transform their outlook, I was motivated to create books that reflect those experiences. I want to share these stories so that fans can gain an understanding of- and recognition for- the resilience and bravery of children, and never underestimate their potential.

Q- What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

As an experienced mentor and trainer of children, I draw on real life experiences as my research to bring insight into my written work. From short-term successes to long-term results, I have seen growth and development in the kids I’ve worked with that has been inspiring to me.

Q- What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

As an author, one of my most fascinating writing quirks is that I’m incredibly messy. My first drafts are often disorganized and chaotic, and it usually takes a few revisions before the flow feels natural. Nonetheless, I persevere and am often pleasantly surprised with the end result.

Q- What types of questions do you ask yourself when planning a new book?

it’s essential to understand the needs of your younger audience and create content that is both engaging and beneficial.  I start off with questions like, “What do kids need the most guidance with?” and “How can I make my writing interesting and engaging?” “What seems to inspire them to become their best self?”

Q- What is your work schedule like when you are writing?

As an author, I kickstart my day with a creative burst: I’m up at 3am or 4am, this is when my mind is sharpest and there are no distractions. For that first half hour of writing, I brainstorm ideas, put pen to paper on whatever comes to mind, and even work on drafts of my other books in progress. It’s in that space that I come up with my most inspiring ideas.

Q- Does your family support your career as a writer?

As an author, I’m incredibly lucky to have such a strong support system within my family. They give me everything I need to make my writing dreams a reality. Without them, none of this would be possible.

Q- What does your family think of your writing?

My family is ecstatic that I have achieved my dream of becoming a published author! They are not only pleased to read my work, but also proud of my perseverance and dedication to writing.

Q- What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?

Finding an amazing artist was the best investment an author could make. After all, no one can tell a story quite like the author—but it’s the artist who can bring the story to life. By collaborating with the right artist, I was able to bring together words and visuals to create an unforgettable experience for my readers.

Q- What would you say is your strength as a writer?

As an author, I understand the difficulty of allowing someone to review your work and keeping your feelings out of the equation. It takes strength — not only emotionally, but also professionally — to remain open to feedback and incorporate it into your writing. I’m proud to say that my strength is precisely this: the ability to accept and incorporate criticism without taking it personally.

Q- What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

As an author, I was shocked to discover just how lengthy the book production process is. I naively assumed it would be up and running in a few months — not the near year it took. No wonder so many authors rely on professional help to navigate the publishing process!

Q- What is your favorite part of being a writer?

I’m passionate about bringing books to life; every step of the journey is incredibly captivating to me.  I love the journey of bringing a book from a blank page to its finished form.
